THE BENEFITS OF INVESTING IN MUTUAL FUNDS
Suitability For A Wide Range Of Investors
Mutual funds enable investors with both small and large amounts of capital to benefit from professional management through a liquid investment in diversified portfolios.
Professional Management
The mutual fund investor benefits from professional investment management. The pool of funds to which the investor contributes is invested by experts in financial markets who have the knowledge and information necessary to make informed investments according to the objectives of the funds.
In most cases these managers will be better acquainted with these markets and investments than the investors themselves. Even the most sophisticated investor may not have the time required to research and monitor investments as part of a successful investment strategy.
Diversification
The large pool of wealth created by individuals contributing to a mutual fund can amount to hundreds of millions of dollars, or even billions of dollars. This allows the fund to buy many individual securities, so fund returns are not heavily dependent on the ups and downs of a few select investments. This reduces the investment risk inherent in &lsquoputting all your eggs in one basket.&rsquo
Securities regulations limit the holdings of any one security to 10% of the assets in the fund, which further reinforces the principle of diversification.
What&rsquos more, the investment decisions are left to the manager. The individual need not worry about when to buy and sell securities, what to do with dividends and other income, and how to ensure safekeeping of securities.
Mutual funds also offer investment alternatives not readily available to individual investors, such as holdings in foreign markets.
Liquidity
Mutual funds can be conveniently and quickly bought and redeemed. Funds are available from a wide range of sources, including fund companies themselves.
To redeem units for their current value, investors need only submit a formal redemption request. The fund is then usually required to issue payment for the units within five business days of the latest valuation date for the funds.
Transferability
In many cases investors can also conveniently switch among funds offered by a fund organization, depending on their financial objectives and changing financial market conditions. Holdings can usually be switched from one fund to another &ndash for example, form a bond fund to an equity fund &ndash on the same day.
